How to prepare a student for a job interview in English online
How to run mock job interviews in English in an online class and turn every rehearsal into concrete feedback the student can review before the big day.
Preparing a student for a job interview in English is one of the most urgent requests a private teacher gets. The student already has a date set, is nervous, and wants just one thing: to walk into the conversation with the recruiter speaking with confidence.
The challenge is that interview prep in English isn't a grammar lesson. It's rehearsal. And rehearsal only works when the student can see what needs to change between one attempt and the next.
Why preparing a student for an interview in English is different from a regular class
In a regular class, mistakes are part of the process and you correct them calmly. In interview prep, every answer needs to be polished. "Tell me about yourself", "What is your biggest weakness", "Why do you want to work here". The student is going to hear these questions for real, and fast.
The problem is that, in the heat of the simulation, you don't want to interrupt. If you stop the student at every slip, the mock interview loses its realism and they don't build the stamina to answer for two or three minutes straight.
But if you let it run, the mistakes slip by. And when the simulation ends, all you have left is your memory of what happened and a few scribbled notes.
Then there's nerves. The student who speeds up, repeats "you know" and "like" without noticing, or gives answers that are too short because they froze. They don't see it on their own. They need to see it.
How most teachers run mock interviews today
The most common approach is to run the mock interview on Google Meet or Zoom. You play the recruiter, the student answers, and at the end you comment on the main points from memory.
Some teachers record the call and send the file to the student. In practice, almost nobody watches a fifty-minute video looking for where they went wrong. The file sits forgotten in Drive.
Others put together a Google Doc with the classic questions and ask the student to write their answers beforehand. It helps with structure, but it trains writing, not speaking. A memorized answer read off a screen sounds artificial in the real interview.
And feedback almost always ends up on WhatsApp: a voice message from you after class listing what to improve. Useful at the moment, lost by the next week.
What good English interview prep needs
Thinking about what actually moves the student forward, a good routine for preparing for a job interview in English online has a few elements:
- Uninterrupted simulation, so the student practices long answers at a real pace.
- A record of what was said, word for word, so nobody depends on memory.
- Corrections afterwards, with explanations, pointing out grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary.
- Visibility into speaking pace, to show whether the student sped up, spoke too little, or spoke too much.
- Accessible review material the student can open on their own the day before the interview.
- A ready-made question script you can reuse with every student who comes with the same goal.
With this, each simulation becomes a step up. The student leaves class knowing exactly what to adjust on the next attempt.
How to structure mock interview sessions
A sequence that works well is splitting prep into rounds. In the first, you run the whole interview without stopping and note the critical moments. In the second, you review the weakest answers together. In the third, you repeat the simulation and compare.
It's worth varying the type of question each round: behavioral questions, technical questions from the student's field, and closing questions like "Do you have any questions for us". Many students forget to prepare that last one.
And always ask the student to review their own performance before the next class. That's where progress really shows.
How Noladi helps you prepare the student for the interview
In Noladi, the simulation happens in the live classroom, right in the browser. You can link a prepared lesson with the question script, which opens on the collaborative whiteboard, and reuse the same lesson with every student who asks for interview prep. During the simulation, you take notes without interrupting the student.
After class, the lesson review is ready for you and the student: transcription synced with the video, AI correction suggestions with explanations (grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary), speaking stats like pace and speaking time, and the class summary. The student clicks a sentence and jumps straight to the moment they answered, and can hear the correct pronunciation of words. Your notes also take you straight to the right point in the video.
