How to teach English online to students moving abroad
How to prepare students who are moving abroad through online classes, with survival English, real conversation and a review of every class to lock in what matters.
Teaching English online to someone who is moving abroad is different from teaching someone who studies as a hobby. The student has a deadline, a move already booked, and needs to handle real life in another language in the very first weeks.
They don't care about the textbook. They want to rent an apartment, open a bank account, talk to a doctor and understand their coworkers.
Why this student is so different
Someone moving abroad shows up with a very concrete kind of anxiety. It isn't "I want to improve my English", it's "in four months I'll need to manage on my own".
That changes the priority of each class. Perfect grammar is worth less than being understood on a phone call with the rental agency.
It also changes which mistakes matter. A wrong verb tense is fine. A wrong word on a visa form, or not understanding a question at the airport, is not.
And there's the emotional side. These students often freeze when they realize the size of what's ahead. Part of your job as an English teacher for people moving abroad is getting them to talk a lot, make mistakes with you, and arrive already used to it.
What goes into these classes
An English program for moving abroad usually revolves around real situations, not chapters:
- Arrival: immigration, airport, transportation, addresses.
- Housing: viewing a place, the lease, talking to the landlord.
- Paperwork: bank, documents, registering with public offices.
- Health: booking an appointment, describing symptoms, the pharmacy.
- Work or study: introducing yourself, meetings, email, small talk.
- Social life: neighbors, the supermarket, restaurants, being invited out.
Each situation becomes a roleplay. You play the clerk, the landlord, the recruiter. The student talks, freezes, tries again.
It's worth adapting to the destination. Someone going to Canada, Ireland or Australia will hear different accents and expressions, and will deal with different systems.
How most teachers run these classes today
The most common setup is a video call on Google Meet or Zoom, a shared document with vocabulary, and WhatsApp to send a summary afterwards.
It works at first. The problem shows up over time.
Vocabulary ends up scattered across files, messages and voice notes. The student no longer remembers which class covered how to ask for a rental quote.
The roleplay happens and disappears. The student spent twenty minutes simulating a job interview, but has no way to go back and hear where they went wrong.
You lose out too. To prepare the next class, you rely on memory or loose notes about what the student already handles and where they still get stuck.
What a good class structure needs
To teach English online to students moving abroad and get results, your structure needs to solve three things.
First, a visual space during class. You need to write the correct sentence on the spot, build a dialogue, sketch how a service interaction flows, and the student needs to be able to write along with you.
Second, the class needs to keep existing after it ends. Students preparing for a move review a lot. They want to hear the roleplay again, read what they said and see where they made mistakes.
Third, you need to see progress. How much the student is speaking, which new words came up, whether they're gaining speed. With a moving date ahead, that sets the pace of the program.
Without this, the student arrives at the destination feeling they studied a lot and remember little.
How Noladi helps with this preparation
With Noladi, you teach the live class in the browser, with a collaborative whiteboard where you and the student write together. You can attach a prepared lesson to the class, with this week's roleplay board already set up. During class, you take notes on the moments you want to come back to.
After class, the student opens the review in their dashboard: they watch the replay with synchronized transcription, see AI correction suggestions for grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, the list of new words and the speaking stats. You see the same and prepare the next situation based on what actually happened, and the student can even download the class whiteboard as a PDF to keep as study material.
